April’s Card Day

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Hello!  Can you believe we’re at the end of April already? Is it just me, or is the year just zipping by?

Here in the UK we’ve had some beautiful weather (though today is a little more traditional for April!), and so I couldn’t resist making a couple of bright and cheerful cards designed to say nothing more than ‘hi’ to a friend.  Dani’s ‘Pop Goes the World’ kit was the perfect choice for this purpose, and is fab for hybrid projects as well as your digi-LO’s.  Here’s my first:

Smile sunflower card

I measured my square card blank before I printed my flowers out, so that the large bloom would fill the card.  I then layered a smaller version of the same flower on the top with sticky foam pads …and how could I resist the cute ladybugs (or ladybirds, as we call them in the UK)?

The second card is hybrid, and all printed, cut out and layered, but I think you’ll agree it would be very easy to make this into a purely digital card:

Curved card with flower

I have one more card to share.  This is the anniversary card I made for my husband to celebrate our 14th wedding anniversary the other day:

Always anniversary card

It was made with ‘Love Bites’, a triple dip kit Dani made with Traci Reed and Shawna Clingerman.  I love the worn and inked effect of the papers.  I used a similarly worn font to add ‘Always’ to the label, and used a thin ribbon to mimic the digital cord wrap element from the kit.  Needless to say, this is the perfect ‘Twilight’ kit… not that I was thinking of anyone else when I was making this card for my beloved husband.

…er, where was I?

As always, you can find details of all the elements used in my cards in my gallery, here.

Enjoy NSD on Saturday!

Tag Card and Envelope Set

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Earth day passed nearly a week ago, and in honor of that day… I think we can use recycling technique to our crafts/scrapping. Today I’m going to show you how to recycle everyday thing you would use into a set of tag card and envelope.

This set is easy to make and prepare, because this is made from toilet paper roll! Nope, I’m not kidding! Here’s what you need:

- Toilet paper rolls (the hard base of your tissue rolls)
- Printed papers and embellishments (i used Dani’s Family Roots kit here)
- Glue and Foam Tapees
- Scissors/cutter

First step is to flatten your toilet roll.. fold it to half, lengthwise. And then glue one end and clip it. Wait until it’s dry. Don’t mind about how it looks like now because we will cover it! :)

Take your printed papers and measure the length and height off the roll. I cut mine at 4×6 then stick it to the toilet roll. Then you should trim it accordingly.

Cut the insert tag (i cut mine at 2.5×4 inch) and also the embellishments and then assemble it!

See? Very easy and eco-friendly craft!

Video Case

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

When I saw Dani’s newest Kit, Retrospect, I immediately thought of making a hybrid project to hold photos or movies.

I also wanted to show you a really easy anyone can do it project that requires nothing besides your printer and household scissors. This is the custom video case insert that I came up with:

I simply scanned in the existing video case insert to use as a template (you could measure it rather than scanning) and then I just created a digital layout and printed it. Here’s the side and back views:

You could also do something similar with a cd/dvd clear case :)

This little piggy…

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Here’s a fun way to recycle and a cute gift as well.

I found a vintage pigtail kit online and thought it was so stinkin’ cute.  I wanted to create something similar and thus the idea was born.  The pigtail kit above is made with Dani’s latest digital kit, Retrospect.

Here’s a peek on the inside, under the felt clips:

I started out with these supplies:

A little glue, a little paint, four cards designed with digital yumminess (each sized 2.38 x 3.75 inches – two printed to each 4×6 photo) and an empty altoids tin.  You can use any altoids tin, but I highly recommend the dark chocolate covered ones.  Yum!

I started out by roughly painting the tin – just to grunge it up and to cover the color on the sides:

I also painted the inside top – totally optional.  I then glued my “cards” onto the surfaces desired.  I painted the edges of the top.  I used one card to house the little hair clips I made and put the bandies/piggy tail holders under the clips.  done.

And this little lovely is made with one of my favorite scrapbooking kits ever.  Seriously, ever.  Do you have one of those?  Where you have all the embellishments memorized?  ”hmmm, I think frame 3 and ribbon 5 would be perfect for this?”  Yup, for me that’s Deerest Spring by Dani Mogstad and Kristin Cronin-Barrow.

And a peek at the inside:

These fit oh-so-nicely into a purse or diaper bag.  Fun!!!

I hope these little treasures inspire you to create something similar – or to just create!  :)  Have a happy creative day.

*smiles*

Looking for Easter ideas?

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Hello!  Are you all ready for the Easter weekend? Don’t worry if you aren’t, ‘cos Girl Talk is always here to share some fab holiday ideas with you.

I am (as you may have gathered from our new monthly Card Days!) predominantly a card maker – so I’ll start with a card I made for a wonderful friend, Michelle, first:

Easter bunny card and basket

I was so pleased with the bunny ears – made from the petals of paper blooms - that I had to share it with you!

Take a look at the basket in detail, as this is an idea you can easily use – twisted raffia glued in place and then ‘filled’ with mini paper blooms and Dani’s perfect Easter eggs:

details of bunny girlcard

The matching Easter basket (made using one of Heather Roselli’s DIY templates) was filled with shredded tissue paper and mini chocolate eggs (which did not last very long after the picture was taken…).  The back ground papers and digital elements used to decorate the card and basket are all from Dani’s lovely ’In Your Easter Bonnet‘ kit.  All other credits can be found here.

How about making some decorations for an Easter tree or willow branches?

Easter tree decos

I used images from Dani’s ‘In Your Easter Bonnet‘ and ‘Pop goes the World‘ – printed on both sides – then simply added a little glitter glue, wire antennae for the bugs and a thread to hang by.  My son was very impressed with them, and they are now all his

Don’t forget that may of Dani’s other kits will work wonderfully for Easter too.  Why not try ‘Sweet Cupcake‘:

…and don’t forget ‘All You Need is Love‘ too.  I made a coaster to match the bag (filled with chocolate eggs, which had to be tested of course), as a mini gift for my Mum.

Easter gifts for grandma

Finally, don’t forget Dani’s lovely Easter-themed ’Springtime Sweets‘ cupcake wrappers make excellent Easter egg wrappers too!:

I hope you have enjoyed these ideas, and remember, we would love to see your hybrid Easter ideas too!

Have a wonderful Easter weekend,

SaraL  x

One Week Until Easter!

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

And with that, I wanted to highlight one of my favorite kits. In Your Easter Bonnet by Dani.

I just LOVE this kit. I love that it has the very traditional Easter spring colors in it, but also orange and brown that makes it so versatile and great for either boy or girl layouts! I wanted to highlight a few of the layouts I found in the gallery using it.
