Getting Ready for Easter!
With all these adorable Sping/Easter kits that Dani has been cranking out I was in the mood to make some Easter projects. The one I am going to share with you today is actual one for the kids. On ebay in October I saw adorable custom made trick or treat cans made with a gallon size paint can. We don’t really celebrate Halloween but I thought making Easter baskets would just be adorable.
Here is your supply list:
2 – 8.5 x 11 digital layouts
1 – 1 gallon empty paint can
5-6 colors of ribbon, about a yard per color
PLUS 22 inches of one color ribbon & a matching rick rack
adhesive (I used a tape runner, mod podge and clear tacky glue)
extra embellishments (I used Heidi Swapp flowers a few buttons)
scissors.
I apologize for the lack of photos. My camera batteries were charging while I was assembling my project.
Step 1 – Create your digital layouts with your favorite Easter kit. I am using Bunny Trails because it will match my daughter’s Easter dress (I should mention that I bought thdress specifically to match the kit!). The exact dimensions may vary for your paint can but mine measured 7.5 high and just under 21″ around so I made my design 7.5 by 10.5 (3150 by 2250 pixels). You make 2 layouts – a front and a back. To keep the can looking uniform I duplicated the main portions of my design and only changed the middle portion. One side of the can has my daughters name, the other side has the “Happy Hunting” labels. I also left room on both edges of my design to allow me to overlap the 2 pages on the can. When printing be sure you change the setting to print the landscape canvas (I forgot the 1st time).
Step 2 – Trim around the edge of your digital layouts. The place the layouts back to back to cut the hole for the handle. It takes a little guess work and trimming, but basically I measured down 1″ from the top on both sides, then cut a half circle that was about 1″ long and 1/2″ in the middle. I still had to do a little trimming with my craft knife when it was on the can. If you have a 1″ hole punch I am sure you could get it perfect.
Step 3 – Start with one of your digital layouts line it up on the can before you start using any adhesive. Make sure that nothing needs trimmed and that everything is going to fit. Once you do that use your adhesive and work from one edge to the next. I used my tape runner to glue down the majority of my front and back. It allowed me a little flexibility if I messed up, since I could reposition it easily. Repeat for the 2nd layout.
Step 4 – Because I used the tape runner I used a little mod podge on the edges where the 2 layouts overlapped.
Step 5 – Time to embellish! I started with the handle of the can. I alternated my ribbon and just kept tying knots. I cut the ends of the ribbons on an angle to help prevent fraying. I did about 35 overall. I did not make a specific pattern to how I used the colors. I wanted it to look random.

Step 6 – I then took my long length of ribbon and glued it along the bottom of the can. After that ribbon dries, attach the rick rack on top.
Step 7 – My final embellishment was my Heidi Swapp flowers with a button center.

Let everything fully dry before filling with some Easter grass and goodies.

Happy Altering Everyone!!

If you want to sit and wait, the late evening would be better, stay there until you can’t see anymore and return to camp via headlamp.

If what I ultimately have to offer is half as much as what you now have to offer, I’ll be able to consider it a job well done.
